3 Lamb Burgers You Should Try in Guangzhou

Don’t know where to get your mutton-in-a-bun fix in Guangzhou? We have an answer: any of the city's three Irish pubs. To help you decide which lamb burger best suits your taste preferences and price point, we have assembled this helpful guide to Guangzhou's three (and perhaps only three) lamb-in-hand meal options.

The Butcher’s Block

We are no strangers to The Butcher’s Block’s array of fine culinary accomplishments, from their flawlessly cooked steaks to the 300 grams of Wagyu beef that sits in their locally renowned Block Burger. We would be lying if we said we aren’t fans. Now, in line with the theme of this article, we are happy to report back on the restaurant’s newest burger – the aptly titled ‘lamb burger.’ This goliath of a hand-held meal is made with 250 grams of imported Australian lamb gently set in a plain white bun. For garnishes, The Butcher’s Block lamb burger (RMB110, with fries) vaunts lettuce, beetroot relish, sundried tomatoes, blue cheese sauce and a slab of the ever-delicious gouda cheese.

Crafted for: the hungry gentleman scholar

Hooley’s Irish Pub

The boys over at Hooley’s have invested considerable effort over the past several months overhauling their menu and the results are praiseworthy. In addition to their must-try chicken mango bites, the culinary craftsmen in the Hooley’s kitchen have gifted Guangzhouers the city’s newest lamb burger (RMB80, with fries and cole slaw). Built with a sesame-brioche bun and a mutton patty that is cooked to near-perfection, this burger sets itself apart with an ingenious hybrid of tzatziki and mint sauces coupled with a generous helping of feta cheese. Of course, the usual suspects also make an appearance, with grilled onions, mixed greens and tomatoes rounding out the list of ingredients. If you haven’t been to Hooley’s recently, or are just bored with the menu’s old favorites, definitely consider this dish worth the visit.

Crafted for: the starving musician and his band of merry followers

The Paddy Field

Composed of not one – but two – patties of minced lamb, onion, rosemary, salt and pepper and served on a homemade focaccia bun, this lamb burger (RMB85, with fries and cole slaw) is truly something special. On their own, each of the burger’s two lamb patties are thinner than the slab of meat on The Butcher’s Block’s lamb burger, but together they form a formidable punch of protein that left us, well, stuffed. Meat aside (since all the burgers in this list have lamb as the essence of choice), this dish’s strongest features are without double the aforesaid focaccia bun and the modest, albeit potent, drizzle of mint sauce.

Crafted for: professional Nascar driver Jeff Gordon (although we don’t think he has ever stopped by to try it)
