Last Friday, Guangzhou welcomed its first Angolan consulate – headed by Ambassador João Baptista da Costa.
The new consulate, which was announced last year, will be aimed at economic diplomacy and have jurisdiction over Fujian, Hainan and Guangxi, according to Macau Hub.
At the consulate’s opening ceremony, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Eduardo de Jesus Beny stated that the consulate’s purpose is to encourage investment and reinforce the existing strategic trust currently enjoyed by Angola and the PRC.
According to the Angolan ambassador to China, João Garcia Bires, the consulate’s other intention is to fill existing services gaps that put unnecessary burden on the embassy in Beijing.
