Judging by the attitudes of netizens today, however, it probably would have been a popular move if they had done so.

This afternoon, six dama attempted to perform their latest routine in Beijing's Tiananmen Square: a merry jig with footballs intended to show support for Xi Jinping's initiatives to clean up and improve Chinese football.

Just three minutes into their performance, however, the ladies were ordered by security personnel to pack up and GTFO.

Web users, however, showed very little sympathy for the ladies.

"Shameless things," the top comment read on the popular Sina news portal, earning thousands of likes. "Square dancing must be banned!"

Indeed, all the top commenters poured scorn on the dancing grannies, pleading them to "please, conduct yourselves with dignity!"

"These people have a mental disorder," another concluded, "we must severely crackdown on it - too ignorant, too embarrassing."
