Mulu

Those of us used to the cliche of a ‘hidden gem’ in the hutongs know to expect a certain atmosphere. Mulu, in a lot of ways, meets expectations. There’s a welcome cleanliness and chic decor that immediately separates us from the bustle of hutong grannies and rambunctious children outside.

Chikalicious

Whether you’re looking for new #Instafood material to tease your followers with or just the latest hip spot to drink away the summer’s ennui, you are in luck. After first opening in Shanghai, Chikalicious, the high-end patisserie from New York, has landed in the Beijing CBD.

Fatty Tunny

Caochangdi restaurant Fatty Tunny (‘tunny’ is British slang for tuna) is the hippest new addition to the area. From the Japanese-focused cuisine to the quirky decor, which includes souvenirs and knickknacks restaurant proprietor May Queen has picked up during her travels, the space is essentially.

Herbal

Herbal takes everything we’ve come to expect from a high-end cocktail bar, and then goes one step further. The space has the air of a Victorian apothecary, and, thankfully, the good taste to make a 19th-century pharmacy look chic.

This tiny space sells coffee at reasonable prices (RMB25 for a latte), but what really sets it apart is the quirky assortment of face masks, flowers and board games it sells.

El Nido

Hutong favorite beer bar El Nido has risen from brickening ashes and reopened within the confines of The Other Place (another hutong hangout – apologies if you live in Chaoyang and don’t understand this paragraph).

Chez Gérard

Fear no more: Chez Gérard is back and looks better than ever. Another shop caught up in last year’s brickings, the laowai-favorite grocery store left its original location on Jianchang Hutong for a roomier one on Beiluoguxiang, where it plans to become the new ‘hutong hangout.’
