Apr 20: Bad Monk

Dusk Dawn Club continues its 3C Jazz series with a performance from local trio Bad Monk. Known for energetic live shows, the band rely heavily on improvisation – which is never a problem for guitarist Simone Schirru, saxophonist Nathaniel Gao, and nimble-wristed drummer Xiao. An initiative founded by Schirru, 3C (which stands for Creative Composers Collective) hopes to bring together the best jazz composers in the city. So as well as offering a night of interesting music, this should also be a chance to connect with Beijing’s creative community. After two shows at DDC last month, the series continues with at least another three events after this gig.

Thu Apr 20; RMB50 presale/RMB60 on the door, free after 11pm; Dusk Dawn Club, see event listing.

Apr 21: Amiina

In Scandinavia’s vast world of instrumental acts, Amiina has carved out its own distinct space. Known for incorporating a seemingly endless number of instruments into their songs, they first gained renown as the string section for acclaimed Icelandic band Sigur Rós. Their latest album, Fantômas, is the perfect soundtrack to the devious deeds of Fantômas – a character that represents the bridge from 19th century Gothic villains to 20th century serial killers in crime fiction – one that they plan on recreating live on their first China tour that stops off in Beijing on Saturday.

Sat Apr 21, 9pm. Yugong Yishan, see event listing.

Ezza is all about tuareg music. The band was founded in 2010 by Omar Adam Goumour, Menad Moussaoui and Stéphane Gratteau. Together they blend rock, African pulse and more. This one should be interesting.

Sat Apr 22, 3pm. RMB280 (door) / RMB200 (presale). Tango Live, see event listing

Apr 23: Owen Pallett

Violins may seem like an unlikely instrument to drive indiepop, but throughout his award-winning career Owen Pallett has consistently broken the mold. While attending the University of Toronto, he was the go-to string arranger for buzz Canadian acts like Arcade Fire, Hidden Cameras and Death from Above. A member of numerous bands ranging from experimental indie (Les Mouches) to Celtic rock (Enter the Haggis), Pallett found instant acclaim when he stepped out on his own.

Sun Apr 23, 8pm, RMB120 presale, RMB150 door. Yugong Yishan, see event listing.
