Dec 16: She Never Sings Our Songs, Rhonda, Division Control (Tianjin), Silent Speech
Head over to School Bar on Friday for Volume 17 of their "Keep Calm and Fly On" gigs. These shows are all about the music, and there’s going to be plenty of it. Instrumental rock band She Never Sings Our Songs (SNSOS), Tianjin post-rockers Division Control, and experimental indie rockers Silent Speech will all be performing.
Fri Dec 16, 9pm-midnight; RMB50; School Live Bar, see event listing.
Dec 17: Mojo Hand & Shun Kikuka
American blues musician Shun Kikuka has quite the track record. He’s played with many of the greats, from B.B. King, Koko Taylor and Otis Rush. As a Chicago guy he’s also played the Chicago Blues Festival, among many, many others. Most recently he’s been performing around China, and he’ll be playing this weekend at Jianghu Bar with Mojo Hand.
Sat Dec 17, 9.30-11.30pm. RMB100 (advanced), RMB150 (door); Jianghu Bar.
Dec 17: Invasion China Tour 2016
Beijing’s favorite DIY vinyl label Genjing Records is putting on a display of international friendship by bringing together punk bands from France and the Republic of Korea (as well as acts with members from both countries). The lineup includes Le Crabe, Digou, Klaus Legal and the frankly terrifying one-man-band Octopoulpe. Hold on to your kimchi baguette.
Sat Dec 17; RMB50; School Live Bar, see event listing.
Dec 18: Rie Fu
If you’re into Japanese singer-songwriters, then you’ll know all about Rie Fu. But if you’re not, don’t let this put you off the RMB200 ticket price. Try something new, yo. A deft guitarist with an endearing, borderline-melancholic voice, Rie Fu injects healthy doses of pop into delightful snippets of folk. She’s been a mainstay in Japan since 2004, though appearances here in China are all too rare. A frequent visitor to the UK (where she often plays and records), the Tokyo native is fluent in Japanese and English, with most of her songs performed bilingually.
Sun Dec 18, 8-10pm; RMB200-RMB580; Tango 3F / Hit FM Live.
Dec 18: Snakehips Asia Tour
Oliver Lee and James Carter are the two musicians behind the British R&B and electronic duo Snakehips. You might know them from their popular hit single “All My Friends,” which features vocals from Tinashe and Chance the Rapper. The band has more recently collaborated with Zayn from the uber-popular band One Direction to create their single “Cruel.” Their sound bounces around between trap, hip-hop, R&B, electronic and jazz. And they'll be landing at Yugong Yishan on Sunday.
Sun Dec 18, 9.30pm-midnight. RMB240 (door), RMB180 (presale); Yugong Yishan, see event listing.
