Sep 21: Aesthesis
Russian band’s Aesthesis are the latest booking at Yugong Yishan to feed Beijing’s hunger for post-rock. With a sizable discography and reputation for brooding live shows, there’s some nuanced instrumental rock to be enjoyed here (if you ignore the band’s penchant for pretentious song names like ‘Arise From Dreams of Thee’ and ‘Sailing to Constantinople’).
Wed Sep 21; RMB120 presale (RMB150 door); Yugong Yishan, see event listing.
Sep 21-23: Lee Ritenour & Friends
Lee Ritenour has been doing the music thing since the '70s. And he has lots to show for it. The GRAMMY-award winning musician has recorded more than 40 albums with 35 chart songs. He's also a founding member of Fourplay, which many say is one of the most successful groups in contemporary jazz. And he'll be performing in Beijing this week.
Sep 21-23, 7.30-8.45pm. RMB280 (bar), RMB400 (side), RMB560 (table). Blue Note Beijing, see event listing.
Sep 22: The Original Rebels: FunkSoul Brothers
Get ready for a night of soul, funk and hip-hop. But this time it’s all going to be done by the true originals. It’s doesn’t get more real than this.
Thurs Sep 22, 9pm. RMB30 (presale)/RMB40 (door) DDC, see event listing.
Sep 24: Red Hot Chili Peppers Anniversary Show
Hot Cat Club is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. No, Anthony Kiedis won’t be taking the mic. But The Hunters will be on the scene, playing Chili Peppers tunes all night long. The manager’s birthday also happens to be this week, so there will be all-you-can-drink mixed drinks, Estrella and tequila shooters for RMB100. It’s gonna be a party.
Sat Sep 24. 9pm. Free entry. Hot Cat Club, see event listing.
Sep 24: The Fleshtones (USA) and Round Eye (Shanghai)
The Fleshtones are legendary. They’ve graced the stages of clubs like CBGB and shared the stage with bands like the The Ramones, The Cramps and Blondie. Not too shabby, right? The band is currently on tour in China and they’re being accompanied by Shanghai’s own Round Eye. They’ll be stopping off at School Bar on Saturday night.
Sat Sep 24, 9pm-midnight. RMB80/RMB70 (students). School Bar, see event listing.
