Mifan/Mafan: Bite-sized food news and reviews

In our new feature Mifan/Mafan, we cover the latest restaurant and bar news in the form of highly digestible news bites. All we hope to do is answer a simple question: is the rice worth the hassle?

Nothing gets our hearts racing like new openings! The excitement! The anticipation! The carbs! Last month, we saw loads of them. There’s the new Pizza Express in Raffles City, at Dongzhimen. There’s another Zhang Mama at Jintai lu. Crystal Jade opened a casual xiaolongbao-and-noodle outlet in Indigo Mall. There are not one, but two new pie places: Beijing Pie near Forbidden City and Two Guys and a Pie (again) in Sanlitun. That’s at least Three Guys and/or Gals, plus many more pies.

But if you’re looking to do something more than stuff your own pie hole – behold. This week sees a few events worth ENJOYing, starting with an ENJOY deal at Hagaki. The sushi mecca is offering a discount on a multi-course abalone and sea urchin meal through the ENJOY app, which offers deals on set menus at high-end restaurants throughout the city. We ENJOYed the sashimi plate, which included fresh sea urchin, and slurped a particularly ENJOYable matsutake soup. It’s a lot of food – may we suggest taking a date? Our food & drink editor is single, readers ;)

If that’s not enough raw fish for you, then chef Alan Wong of Hatsune will literally show you how he rolls. The Cali-style sushi joint is offering sushi-making classes for fans this Thursday, Sep 10 (in Chinese) and Friday, Sep 11 (in English), from 7-9pm at its Kerry Mall location. The cost is RMB300 and includes ingredients, instructions and even a kit of sushi-making equipment for you to take home. RSVP to kristen@hatsunesushi.com.

The weekend, however, is for drinking (obvs), and this weekend, there are a couple events where you can find us (including our food & drink editor – still single!). Adam’s is hosting a drag show on Friday (9pm) followed by a party and giveaways. And Saturday, our favorite hutong bars along Line 5 are throwing the Line 5 Pub Crawl. Starting at 3 p.m., participants will get drink deals at each of the stops along the way – Slow Boat Brewery, Cuju, The Distillery, Más and Capital Spirits.

Migas and Jing-A are also teaming up Saturday for an end-of-summer blowout on the Migas roof. Enjoy their collaboration beer-chicken recipe as part of their Beer & Chicken set (beer and said chicken) for RMB80 while DJs pump the beats.

All in all, there’s a lot going on. If this article were a WeChat message, we’d be all like [pizza emoji] [high-five emoji] [dog-chowing-down-on-dog-food sticker], you know?

And with that, we leave you with this:

Off the Beaten Plate

"Sex in the air, I don’t care, I like the smell of it" is not only the most memorable line of Rihanna’s 2011 hit ‘S&M,’ but also a good way to describe new S&M-themed restaurant, Ke. Alright, no-one’s literally having kinky sex on Ke’s Sanlitun confines, but sex is indeed in the air – or on the walls, rather. Porno-worthy paraphernalia hangs around the restaurant, and things we see on display during our visit includes chains, bras with spikes on them, leather whips and dogs collars… that aren’t made for dogs. Meanwhile, couples and (surprise!) single dudes eat innocuous dinner fare at the tables below. The menu features mediocre guijie-style spicy crawfish – now that’s masochism.
