With tales of its value preceding it, the OCC headed to Ganesha to continue its 2018 hunt for the Shanghai Curry House of the Year. Ganesha is well known in the Shanghai curry scene for its lunchtime deals, and so members – particularly those with shallower pockets – were excited to see how this would translate into a Friday night dinner. The first thing a shrewd visitor to Ganesha will notice is that it is located in a shopping mall. Conversely, the first thing that a shopper at the Hugemall Complex will notice is that it is home to a curry house – so strong is the delightful smell of curry wafting enticingly through the establishment. Music to an OCC members’ nostrils; we can only hope the rest of Shanghai’s malls take note. Beyond that, it’s fair to say the rest of Ganesha’s atmosphere leaves something to be desired – a small venue with tired settings, the emphasis here is on functionality rather than appealing décor. ‘Functional’ is also the best description of the custome

Hit Wicket has a mezzanine area called the ‘Donald Bradman stand.’ Bradman was the best player to have ever played the game; despite this, in his last ever innings he famously failed, out second ball for 0. It seems that it’s this spirit of Don Bradman that Hit Wicket is channeling. For a sports bar, the atmosphere is flat, with music playing on the screen instead of sports; our only respite from which was when the power cut out at least 3 times throughout the night. The service was similarly lacking – this score may have been had two girls not entered the venue during our meal and attracted the attention of our server for the rest of the night instead. The food was a similar story; soggy poppadums, samosas served with tomato ketchup, and underwhelming mains. On value, the price of over 300 per head (including drinks) was agreed upon by all to be expensive given the performance of the venue on the other four categories. Overall, the OCC cannot recommend Hit Wicket.

The customer care & service is the first note of quality at Indian Kitchen. The manager offered on-point recommendations and was ready to accommodate our needs. Drinks were rarely empty and food came quickly - all despite the presence of a Bollywood actress in the upstairs area. With the OCC there too, rarely has a curry house been graced by so many prominent diners at once. The highlight was the food itself. The starters of samosas, paneer tikka and kebabs had us buzzing for more. This was well founded as the curries came - rogan josh, chicken madras, garlic beef and palak paneer. All dishes were superb; generous heapings of succulent pieces of meat and paneer, and with a pleasing level of spice often wanting in Shanghai. Despite attracting big names from both the Bollywood and curry worlds, Indian Kitchen represents value for money. 264 per head was deemed to be fantastic value given the food & drinks consumed. The OCC can heartily recommend this venue www.oakhamcu

KOTG was an all-round high-quality experience and the worthy recipient of the Oakham Curry Club’s coveted Curry House of the Year (CHOTY) award for Shanghai in 2017. The atmosphere was quite lively, with diners coming and going throughout the night. Given all other venues in Cool Docks seemed empty – even on a Friday night – it’s clear KOTG is doing something right. The food was of a particularly high quality. The kebabs we ordered as starters were spiced to perfection. The array of curries for mains did also not disappoint, although some members mentioned a lack of spice, even in the mutton vindaloo. The service was another highlight. The owner Sandeep was particularly accommodating, as was our main waiter, who even came back after we ordered to inform us of an extra daily special he thought would be of interest. The final price of 370 RMB was deemed to be good value given the high quality and sheer amount of food and drinks ordered, too. www.oakham
