More than 400 men and woman recently gathered at a Tianjin water park for a bikini contest, although at this competition, there wasn't a college student or sopping wet white T-shirt in sight. No, this contest was for the seniors.
Now in its third year, Grandbikini only accepts contestants over the age of 55 and is more focused on good vibes than first place ribbons and female-figure-shaped trophies.
Participants paraded down a runway that went right into the water, and were judged based on smiles, gestures and stage presence.
A wide array of swimwear was on show at the event, from itsy bitsy, teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikinis to fancy one-piece swimsuits featuring dress-like bottoms. Some seniors added a youthful, edgy flare to their look by applying fake tattoos.
The event also featured an ‘evening wear’ portion, with seniors donning evening gowns, qipao dresses and, for the men, suits.
The oldest contestant was 78-year-old cancer survivor Ma Jing, who stated: 'If I can take part in a bikini contest at this age, for me it means I'm mentally happy and healthy.” She added that competing in Grandbikini was an honor, according to the Daily Mail.
