A red alert for Typhoon Lekima was issued on Friday morning by China’s National Meteorological Center, according to Global Times. The typhoon is now expected to be the strongest of the year so far.

This update comes just a day after a yellow warning for the 9th typhoon of the year was released.

Wind speeds were at about 209 kilometers per hour at 8am on Friday morning, with the typhoon located roughly 290 kilometers southeast of Wenling in southern Zhejiang province. However, wind speeds are expected to decrease before the storm hits land.

Reports by CCTV suggest that the typhoon will hit the area between Taizhou and Leqing in Zhejiang province before moving north. A yellow rainstorm warning has also been released by the National Meteorological Center.

The typhoon is expected to affect a number of railway lines. Shanghai-Hangzhou and Hangzhou-Ningbo, among others, are expected to be closed for at least parts of Saturday and Sunday.

Moving at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, the typhoon is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang province on Saturday at noon and will affect Anhui, Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai.

The Chinese Super League match between Shanghai Shenhua and Shenzhen Kaisa, which was due to be played at 7.35pm on Saturday evening, has been postponed due to the weather conditions, while other football games in the area have also been rescheduled.

Emergency response units have been strengthened ahead of the typhoon, according to People’s Daily
