On Wednesday morning, the public security bureau in Xuzhou, Jiangsu issued a statement that 19 people were detained this month after their drug tests results came back positive.

Sixteen of those being detained are foreigners, including seven teachers and nine students. One foreigner is being detained under criminal law while the other 18 individuals are detained under administrative detention.

According to the official Weibo account of Red Star News, the teachers who tested positive for drugs work for English First, a notable English-language training center company in China. The company said it is cooperating with the police in their investigation, and told Red Star News that it has “zero tolerance for this,” before adding that the teachers who tested positive for drugs will be dismissed.

The reaction online has been anything but pretty for the international education company and English training centers at large. “I hope this company closes down quickly,” posted one Weibo user upon hearing the news. Others were more understanding, with one netizen writing, “This only happened to several foreign teachers, it’s not like all of EF is doing this. Do you understand?” Other posts simply praised the police for catching the drug users.
