On November 1, a man surnamed Zhang stole a live chicken from a resident of Fenghuang village, on the northern outskirts of Suzhou.
Zhang hailed a taxi from Tangqiao, a neighboring village, to steal the bird in the middle of the night. Xu, the chicken’s owner, woke up the next morning to find his fowl nowhere to be seen.
Luckily, a surveillance camera caught Zhang in the act as he entered Xu’s property and nabbed the sleeping chicken. The taxi’s license plate was also visible, which led police to Mr. Liang, the owner of the car.

Liang told police that he and Zhang were friends from the same village, while also saying Zhang had lied and told him that the chicken was a gift from Xu. Police were able to track the thief down the following day but it was too late for the plump fowl, which weighed over 10 pounds, according to Xu.
Kankan News reported that Zhang boiled the chicken the same night he stole the bird. He served two days in administrative detention for ‘chicken snatching.’
Weibo users were decidedly puzzled by the story, with one person commenting, “the money he paid for the taxi was probably enough to buy some chicken.” Another netizen chimed in, writing: “that chicken was not properly looked after, just left on the side of the road?” Other users suggested Zhang should have ordered delivery instead.
We called the local KFC in Tangqiao to inquire if the restaurant stays open 24 hours daily. “Our store opens at 6am and closes at 10pm,” the attendant informed us, eliminating one possible solution for Zhang’s late-night hunger cravings.
