Tricky to find but infinitely rewarding when you do, this little shop specialises in roasted eel, glazed with a sticky sweet sauce, served over plain white rice. There are other branches in town, notably at Zhongshan Park and Guyang Lu, but this quiet little spot has served Shanghai's community of Japanese expats well for years.
- Local cards accepted
Price: RMB100-200 per person
Who's going: Japanese expats, a smattering of locals.
Good for: casual dining, Japanese food, specialty dishes, quiet lunch and dinner
Directions: Take a taxi or walk from Longxi Lu Metro to the corner of Hongmei Lu and Yan'an Lu. Then head west down Yan'an Lu for roughly 100 meters, until you get to Lane 3717, which resembles a dilapidated concrete driveway. Head down this road and turn left, continuing past the other (also good) Japanese restaurants until you see a sign that says 'いば昇.'
