For those of you who have never heard of Alpha Wolf, listen to the young band’s debut album release Mono, which was met with critical acclaim. The Australian metalcore outfit has a knack for combining the sounds of multiple genres. You’ve got to see it to believe it.

Italy: the Beauty of Knowledge is an exhibition led by the National Research Council along with five Italian science museums based respectively in Naples, Trento, Florence and Milan. Organized by the Consulate General of Italy in Guangzhou and the Guangdong Science Center, Guangzhou will be the only stop in China. This exhibition shows the relationship between scientific research, innovation and quality of life. Exhibits, showcased on five themes – health, environment, space, food and nutrition and cultural heritage, will lend insight into the innovative side of the Mediterranean nation.

Thu, Aug 22: Trivia Night at Hooley’s

Join quizmaster Matt Bossons for 40-plus mind-bending questions on topics ranging from current events to pop culture, history to geography and everything in between. Basically, if you can identify all seven species of sea turtles, this quiz is for you. If you can’t identify turtles, this quiz is also for you, as there aren’t many turtle questions. The quiz kicks off at 8.30pm and the top three teams will receive boozy prizes courtesy of the good folks at Hooley’s.

Thu-Sun, Aug 22-25: Paw Patrol Musical

The furry characters from popular American children’s show Paw Patrol are visiting Guangzhou this week for a musical performance aimed at the youngsters in town. Led by an 11-year-old boy, a team of courageous canines inspired by real-life public professions (such as police officers and firefighters) are always ready to save the day. Watching this musical is a great way to teach your little ones about bravery.

The classics of Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki come to life this week at the Xinghai Concert Hall in an audiovisual extravaganza. Performers from some of the country’s best conservatories will come together to deliver a sensational, family-friendly musical rendering of such pioneering anime legends as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro and Valley in the Sky.

Sun, Aug 25: TEDxXiguan 2019 Conference

This week, TEDxXiguan is set to return with a new conference themed ‘Action/Intention.’ More than 10 speakers will share their stories of acting on their best intentions. The line-up is a motley crew of professionals from different fields: choreography, photography, food design, astrophysics, architecture, journalism and much more. This year’s conference will see performances by Guangzhou rock band Nouvelle and Swing Canton. A ‘Xiguan booth’ will be set up to offer themed books and interactive experiences to curious participants. Attendees will also be treated to a ‘community lunch’ during the nine-hour event. As with previous years, there will be simultaneous translation provided at the conference.
