For Chinese opera lovers, Peking opera The Grand Mansion Gate will be staged at Guangzhou Opera House this week. It is adapted from the popular namesake TV drama, which tells a love story of a courtesan and the son of a wealthy family in Beijing, against the backdrop of feudal familial values.

Wed, Ongoing: Ladies’ Night at Zapata’s

Everyone’s favorite pig is returning to Guangzhou to entertain fans with magic, balloons and all her usual mischief. This Chinese production is an adaptation from the original English version and will have Peppa Pig fill the stage in a new live musical show that’s more fun than a muddy puddle! Mummy Pig has prepared a special treat, which includes new songs, games and surprises, and all of Peppa’s friends are invited to join in on the celebration and create treasured memories.

The classics of Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki come to life this week at the Xinghai Concert Hall in an audiovisual extravaganza. Performers from some of the country’s best conservatories will come together to deliver a sensational, family-friendly musical rendering of pioneering anime legends such as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro and Valley in the Sky.

Fri-Sun, Aug 2-4: Roméo et Juliette the French Musical

Based on Shakespeare’s namesake play, French musical Roméo et Juliette has been performed on stages throughout Europe and translated into many languages. The brainchild of French choreographer Redha Benteifour, with music and lyrics by prestigious composer Gérard Presgurvic, this production has entertained audiences with a few twists: the nature of the lovers’ death is different and new characters such as Death and the Poet are introduced.

Sun-Mon, Aug 4-5: Dancing Lion

Chronicling the story of the Cantonese people’s struggle against foreign forces invading Canton during the first Opium War, Dancing Lion tells the story of broken families, separated lovers and unyielding courage. The creation of this award-winning dance drama took five years, but the result is an uncompromising work that will amaze audiences.
