Mon, Jun 10: Key Ensemble

Performances by the 16-piece a cappella group Key Ensemble are riveting experiences to say the least. The Finnish ensemble’s tunes are marked with folk rhythms, romanticism and examples of contemporary music from Finland. The accolade-crowned Key Ensemble will perform several programs at Guangzhou Opera House this month, divided into two unique parts: Crazy Music from Finland and Northern Lights and Nightless Nights.

Wed, Jun 12: Trivia Night at Morgan’s
That’s PRD and Carlsberg invite you to attend a special trivia night at Morgan’s this Wednesday. Attendees can expect a range of head-scratching questions, from music and pop culture to geography, beer and current events, spread out over four rounds. Guangzhou quiz lovers will not want to miss this very special quiz, which will run from 8-10pm and feature prizes including fancy imported wines (no Great Wall here, folks) and a voucher from Morgan’s. Fri-Sat, Jun 14-15: Brinum-X: Underwater Bubble Show

A massive production combining mimes, jugglers, puppetry, sand art, contortionism, bubble magic, dance and drama, this eclectic show features original music, costumes, choreography, optical illusions, laser lights and video mapping, all employed to tell the story of Mr. B. He is a stressed-out individual who depends very much on technology and has zero imagination. In the story, Mr. B is accidentally transported into Bubblelandia, a world where he encounters mythical and fantastic creatures.

Sat, Jun 15: Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Racing Tournament

This popular dragon boat tournament will be held on the section of the Pearl River between the North Gate of Sun Yat-sen University and Guangzhou Bridge. Both traditional and standard dragon boats will be competing for glory, and attendees can also check out a number of colorful parades. Last year, the Pearl River saw a total of 130 teams and roughly 5,000 athletes. Teams from as far afield as Iran, Canada and the UK will compete against homegrown teams for the championship title. Guangzhouers, come cheer for and support your home team – the Guangzhou Dragons.

Sat, Jun 15: Opening of Huadu Ski Resort

The wait is over! Guangzhou’s first indoor ski resort, which broke ground back in 2014, is finally set to open to the public this week on June 15. The massive building will be able to accommodate up to 3,000 people at the same time and offer 30 snowy activities. The facility boasts a number of ski and snowboard trails, in addition to a toboggan track. Guangzhou dwellers who’ve been longing for a little fun in the snow, it’s your time!

Sat, Jun 15: Glenn Wool

Catch Canadian comedian Glenn Wool at Jojo’s Riverside on Saturday for a laugh-a-palooza. Getting his start in Vancouver in 1995, Wool quickly became a world-renowned comedian performing all over the UK. In recent years, he’s brought his comedic gold to audiences in Los Angeles, New York, Sydney and Dubai.

Sat, Jun 15: MazikDuo

Spanish clarinetist Tolo Genestar and pianist Marc Susmi are the MazikDuo, who will perform music from their latest album – Jewish Life, Portraits of the Past, which perfectly combines classical music and klezmer, a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of eastern Europe. Come and listen to the talented and award-winning Spanish duo at Guangzhou Opera House.

Sat, Jun 15: CIS International Day

At the Canadian International School (CIS) International Day this Saturday, an array of fun games and activities will be on offer for attendees to enjoy. Art exhibitions will showcase the amazing artwork created by CIS students, while nearly 50 stalls will provide goodies, exotic eats, books and games, among other items. The raffle will feature a selection of amazing prizes, including Huawei phones, Lego sets, dining coupons and a three-night stay at Club Med locations in Bali, Phuket and Cherating Beach. Sun, Jun 16: Boyzone Thank You & Goodnight Concert

The latest and final album of legendary Irish boy band Boyzone, Thank You & Goodnight was released last year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group’s founding back in 1993. This June, the Irish boys are touring China with the album to say thank you and good night to loyal fans in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Sun, Jun 16: French Journée

As part of the Festival Croisements 2019, the Consulate General of France in Guangzhou, Union des Français de l’Etranger (UFE) and The Canton Place organize the first ‘French Journée’ on June 16, from noon to 9pm at the central plaza of The Canton Place. Free and open to all, the ‘French Journée’ offers a full day of French culture: There will be a French market with 50 stalls selling food, wine, crafts and more, as well as outdoor activities. French band Superjava is also slated to put on a performance in the evening.

Sun, Jun 16: Lucas and Arthur Jussen

Lucas and Arthur Jussen are both brothers and partners in crime, specifically when it comes to their classical piano venture. After entering the world of classical music at a young age, the duo have played with world-class orchestras, including the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Mariinsky Orchestra, since then. The Dutch brothers’ Guangzhou performance will feature spectacular piano duets and is sure to enthrall the city’s classical music enthusiasts.

Sun, Jun 16: 2019 Vertical Marathon

Hundreds of contestants have joined this year’s International Vertical Marathon Guangzhou Series, which asks participants to scale some of the highest skyscrapers in Guangzhou. On June 16, ambitious stair climbers from home and abroad will compete to conquer the 206-meter-high and 45-story Kingold Century building.
