Thu, Jun 6: Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra

Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, founded in 1743 by both professional musicians and music aficionados, is a German orchestra that boasts a humble history of collaborating with classical music giants. They are the only orchestra that played all nine symphonies by Beethoven while he was still alive. Guangzhou’s classical music enthusiasts shall not miss their performance this week.

Fri, Jun 7: Nine Cellos Performing Joe Hisaishi

One of the most renowned composers living in Japan today, Joe Hisaishi has become a household name for his anime scores. Hisaishi has created music for famous movies, animes and beyond. At Xinghai Concert Hall this week, a concert dedicated wholly to Hisaishi’s works will be staged, featuring a pianist and nine cellists.

Jun 7-9: Guangzhou Wetland Park Dragon Boat Festivity

A total of 30 teams, including the Guangzhou International Dragons, a local team comprised of individuals hailing from different nations, will be paddling on the river at Haizhu Wetland Park on June 7. From June 8-9, a wide range of themed activities will be held, including dragon boat and SUP (paddleboard) experience trips for the public, land-based games for families as well as booths run by companies and environmental NGOs.

Sun, Jun 9: Urbanites Dragon Boat Cultural Experience Day
Being held on June 9 from 9am-4pm, this fun-filled, family-friendly event invites up to 30 families to come to experience the magic of Dragon Boat Festival at Liede village. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about traditional Chinese customs, and bask in Lingnan culture.
So, what can you expect at our first-ever Urbanites Dragon Boat Cultural Experience Day? Well, curious reader, a whole lot of fun and food – that’s what! Make zongzi – the most iconic foodstuff of Dragon Boat Festival – the traditional way at the Li Ancestral Hall, before engaging in a poetry-reading experience where attendees will be given a poem to read before the others.

Until Jun 22: Leonardo Opera Omnia

As one of the events held worldwide to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci, exhibition Leonardo Opera Omnia is currently on display at Guangzhou Library as one of the stops on its world tour. In this exhibition curated by one of Italy’s best modern art scholars, Antonio Paolucci, audiences are able to relish a total of 17 true-to-scale replicas of da Vinci’s masterpieces in high definition.

All month: Zongzi Gift Box

In the spirit of the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival, Langham Place, Guangzhou has prepared two unique zongzi gift boxes, each containing two tasty dumplings. Packaged in a red gift box featuring a Manchurian-style window design, both of these zongzi boxes are ideal gifts for friends and family over the festival. The Langham Place’s zongzi gift boxes are available for order from May 1 and for pickup between May 20 and June 6 at Ming Court. Guests can also place an order via the hotel’s official WeChat (ID: LanghamGuangzhou).

Ongoing: Eight Flavors of Lingnan

Chefs at LN Garden Hotel, Guangzhou took a culinary journey across Guangdong before they created the eight exquisite dishes featured on this delightful menu. The resulting selection is a tribute to the diverse array of foodstuffs found across the region. For example, the ‘South Sea cockle’ combines the flavors of a famous variety of fried crab from Hong Kong, a sauce from Macau and Guangzhou’s vermicelli and diced garlic. The set menu is now available at the hotel’s Peach Blossom restaurant.
