Huawei's Dongguan Campus Replicates 12 European Cities

Are you missing the grand Old World architecture of your European home nation? Well, if you're within the vicinity of Dongguan you can now pop into Huawei's new 9-square-kilometer campus, where the telecommunications company has replicated buildings and architectural styles from 12 different cities around Europe.

Among the scenic areas represented at the campus are Oxford, Paris, Verona, Bruges, Granada and more. According to CNBC, eight of the total 12 towns represented had been built as of January 2019.

Currently around 17,000 employees are housed on the campus at Songshan Lake, while the area can reportedly hold up to 25,000 people. The sprawling campus is connected in areas by bridges, while a tram system operates to transport employees from place to place.

Apartments in this European-style campus are allocated to Huawei employees based on a range of criteria such as period of time residing in Dongguan, number of years working with the company and annual performance. The area cost the company RMB10 billion to build, while apartments there sell for only RMB8,500 per square meter (the average second-hand home sells for RMB15,655 per square meter in Dongguan).

European-style destinations are not a rarity in South China (see Halstatt in Huizhou for reference) and this latest European microcosm has been designed as a means to show Huawei's technological and business development over the past few years, according to 360doc.com.
