That's Guangzhou takes a look at the best gigs of the week.

Thu, Dec 20: Mimi Banka @ SD Livehouse

Mimi Banka have been making the rounds. Having gained quite a bit of traction with their emotional, seaside music, they were invited to take part in the Interfilm Festival in Europe, an event which focuses on short films. This weekend they are invited by Qiii Snacks Records to take the stage alongside locals, Smelly Hoover and Nein Or Gas Mus.

Thu Dec 20, 8pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.

Fri, Dec 21: Elephant Gym @ Mao Livehouse

Long before math rock was fashionable, Taiwanese band Elephant Gym were planting the seeds for what has clearly been a musical shift towards that very technical genre in recent years. Their latest album Shuidi showed off the band’s range, as they allow bass guitars to jam at the forefront of their tunes, while also experimenting with bells and atmospherics.

Fri Dec 21, 8.30pm; RMB120 presale, RMB150 at the door. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.

Sat, Dec 22: Power Milk @ SD Livehouse

Bringing together five of the better bands involved in the underground scene here in Guangzhou, this performance will shine a light on funk via Power Milk, math rock via Nein Or Gas Mus, as well as indie rock via HOO. If you are interested in the independent scene here in the city, this is one event you don’t want to miss.

Sat Dec 22, 8.30pm; RMB60 presale, RMB80 at the door. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.

Sat, Dec 22: Ehyo ’42’ Party @ Leak One Bar

Ostensibly a haircutting/music event, this show kicks off at 4pm on Saturday and features a pretty stonking line up of DJs, including DJ Tayta, DJ MozGan and DJ Vale. If you, like us, enjoy afternoon beers while getting a new buzz cut and listening to good music, this event has your name written all over it.

Sat Dec 22, 4pm; RMB60 presale. Leak One Bar. See event listing. Tickets.

Sun, Dec 23: Monster KaR @ T:union

Monster KaR are one of the most talented rock bands that Guangzhou has to offer right now. Powerful vocals and fantastic songwriting combine to give their live show an intimacy that is hard to find. You can catch them playing songs from their latest self titled album this weekend.

Sun Dec 23, 8pm; RMB80 presale, RMB120 at the door. T:union. See event listing. Tickets.
