Tue, Apr 24: Idea Exchange

Cathal Ó Domhnalláin, a Guangzhou-based Irishman, will talk about his home country during this week’s Idea Exchange. The ‘Celtic Tiger’ has gone from one of the poorest Western nations 50 years ago to one of the most affluent today. Expect fascinating tales and a healthy dose of history from the ancient land of Ireland.

Tue, Apr 24: Taco Tuesday at Tristan’s

Fri, Apr 27: Maple Jazz Band 10th Anniversary Performance

In celebration of Maple Jazz Band’s 10th anniversary, the group will perform this week at Guangzhou Music Factory in Panyu District. Since its foundation a decade ago at Xinghai Conservatory of Music, the Guangzhou-based jazz band has been infusing their tunes with funk, soul and Latin music, among other genres, and played across the PRC.

Apr 27-May 9: France eMotion

A collaboration between Atout France and the Institut Français, France eMotion, le voyage animé aims to “make French cultural tourism a worldwide experience.” The exhibition sits comfortably at the junction between AR, animation and photography and takes observers on a digital journey to 35 of France’s great cultural landmarks, including the Château de Chambord and Mont-Saint-Michel, among others.

Sat, Apr 28: Keren Ann 

French singer-songwriter Keren Ann sings like a bard. Her debut album LaBiographie De Luka Philipsen, incorporating Russian literature, French poems and Jewish folk music, received rave reviews when released in 2000. She will be performing her chansons, as well as English songs, on stage at Guangzhou Friendship Theater this Saturday.

Sun, Apr 29: Maximilian Hecker ‘Sea of Silence’ Tour 

German music producer and songwriter Maximilian Hecker is adored for his delicate voice and troubadour-esque qualities. From his very first album Infinite Love Songs to Spellbound Scenes of My Cure, Hecker, an all-around musician, has insisted on composing, singing and playing instruments on his own. Hecker describes his songs as melancholy pop hymns.

Sun, Apr 29: Mi Carmen Flamenca 

Born in a village with traditional flamenco heritage near Seville, Spain, flamenco artist Antonio Andrade grew up among aficionados of this eye-catching art form. Serving as the artistic director of Antonio Andrade Flamenco Company, the Spanish artist has created many successful productions enjoyed by audiences the world over, including this rendition of Carmen.

Sun-Mon, Apr 29-30: Christian Blackshaw

Tutored by eminent British classical pianist Sir Clifford Curzon, Christian Blackshaw is a concert pianist of international stature. Returning to the piano after a lengthy hiatus following his wife’s death, Blackshaw’s musicianship didn’t forsake him. His performances still express a range of musical virtues – elegant with a touch of poetic feel. At his Guangzhou concert, Blackshaw has selected some classical piano sonatas by Mozart to uplift audience members. Come and bask in the grace of Blackshaw’s expressive performance.
