Summer is Here: Hot Weather Returns to South China

After a winter season marked by bouts of uncharacteristically cold weather, Guangzhou has emerged into a comfortable, balmy spring complete with pleasant, breezy evenings, fresh blue skies and the kaleidoscope of flower blossoms that the city is so famous for.

Shenzhen too, while having escaped the coldest of the winter weather, has nonetheless been enjoying a temperate March.

Like any honeymoon, though, the good times were bound to come to an end, and by the looks of South China’s weather forecast for the coming week it seems like the mild weather of spring may very much be numbered.

This is no cause for alarm, of course – the infernal temperatures and drown-in-your-bedsheets humidity of a full-blown Cantonese summer are still several weeks off at least, but it’s clear that warmer temps are fast-approaching.

The mercury in both cities is set to climb steadily this week, shooting through the high-20s and brushing up against the 30-degrees-Celsius mark.

For Guangzhou, this will mean partially cloudy skies running into the weekend, when temperatures are expected to rise to 30 degrees.

In Shenzhen, clearer skies will prevail, but daytime temperatures will remain nearly as hot.

Overnight lows in both cities will hover around the 20-degree mark – still comfortable enough for an evening amble or early-morning jog.

While this year’s brief spring did indeed feel short-lived, the warm weather has returned markedly later than last year, when local media reported the return of ‘summer’ as early as late-February
