Xibian village in Guangzhou’s Huadu District recorded a record-setting temperature of 46.4 degrees Celsius at 2.43pm yesterday (August 6), according to Guangzhou Weather.
Another town in Huadu, Huadong, saw the mercury climb to 41.1 degrees Celsius.
To put that heat in perspective, consider that California’s Death Valley, recently named one of the hottest places on earth by the Independent, saw a high of 44 degrees Celsius yesterday.
Admittedly, doubt has been cast on the temperature readings, with the Huadu division of Guangzhou Meteorological Bureau stating that the reading was from an “autonomous observatory,” which is affected by its surroundings (like black pavement) to a greater deal.
Data recorded by autonomous observatories, temperature in particular, is not accurate, according to Guangzhou Weather.
The Guangzhou Meterological Bureau did not immediately return our calls for comment, but whatever the ‘official’ temperature was yesterday in Huadu, we can personally attest it was hot.
August is traditionally the second hottest month of the year in Guangzhou, with an average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius.
