September 26: 90s Hip Hop and R&B Party
Frank D, aka FlossDawg, is back this week with part two of his celebrated 90s hip hop and R&B night at Rebel Rebel. Expect performances, giveaways and, of course, an eclectic selection of hip hop and R&B songs from the best decade ever. If you missed the first party, you definitely don’t want to miss this one.

September 26: Idea Exchange
Idea Exchange is back after a two-month break. Catch up with like-minded people this Tuesday at a presentation focused on Greece’s idyllic holiday destinations and its role in laying the foundations of Western civilization. Speaker Lampros Papagiannis, a lecturer in Greek civilization at the Guangzhou University of Foreign Study, will introduce attendees to Greece’s beautiful beaches, ancient theatres, music, nightlife, Olympic sporting and even the origin of Christmas.

September 28: Carmen by Alhama Flamenco Company
This adaptation of classic opera Carmen is spiced up with elements of jazz, salsa and flamenco. Fans of the original can experience well-loved songs with new rhythms and moves, while first-time viewers can still enjoy this fresh retelling of a tempestous love story.

September 29: Sousou & Maher Cissoko
The “most popular” world music band in Europe, Sousou & Maher Cissoko is a Swedish-Senegalese duo who have toured in Africa, America, Europe and Asia. Their third album, Africa Moo Baalu, was one of the most popular albums in the world music genre in 2014.

September 29: Hanna Turi
Hailing from Dalarna, Sweden, Hanna Turi fell in love with music at a young age. She started recording her own songs at the age of 9. Her debut album Some Old Tapes was released 2011 and was followed by a US tour. Her peculiar voice has been well-received worldwide and her performances have been applauded by audiences at South by South West Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas, at New York’s well-known venues and during a vast tour of Italy.

September 30: Secret Garden
Excelling at new instrumental music, Irish-Norwegian duo Secret Garden grabbed Europe’s attention with their single ‘Nocturne’ in 1995. There’s a good chance you’ve heard ‘Song from a Secret Garden’ and their powerful composition of ‘You Raise Me Up.’ The renowned duo will visit Guangzhou in September – don’t miss it!

September 30: Dreamshade
Swiss band Dreamshade’s music has been heavily influenced by melodic death metal since day one. Check out their music videos for ‘Photographs,’ ‘Consumed Future’ or ‘Your Voice,’ or come see them performing live at SD Livehouse this week.

Ongoing: Bill Viola: Selected Work 1977-2014
A real maverick in the world’s contemporary art scene, New York-based artist Bill Viola conveys his artistic expression via electronic sounds and images focusing on fundamental human experiences, such as birth, death and consciousness. Famous works by Viola include Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), Fire Woman, Tristan’s Ascension and Quintet of the Astonished. At the Redtory Museum of Contemporary Art, Viola’s works from 1977-2014 will be showcased in a large space modeled on the artist’s Long Beach studio. Meanwhile, public lectures and panels will run throughout the exhibition.

Ongoing: Defenders
New to theaters, the film Defenders is based on the true story of a Kuomingtang military officer leading 600 soldiers to defend a city against the Japanese during World War II. Though all 600 died, the battle was considered a military miracle, for they killed twice as many Japanese troops. Billed as the next Wolf Worriers 2, a China-made movie that broke domestic box office records with a whopping RMB4.4 billion in revenue, Defenders is a window through which audiences are able to learn about one of the many forgotten episodes of the Second Sino-Japanese War.
