UPDATE (Aug 29, 2017 at 6pm CST): Slide the City 2017 in Guangzhou has been canceled by organizers.
As a young child I always relished summer days spent on the Slip N' Slide, which I set up on a hill across the street from my mother’s house. Whizzing shamelessly down the wet, soap-cover sheet of plastic in a hand-me-down speedo I was given by my stepbrother Derek, I developed a fondness for sliding.
Despite several incidents, including one time Derek peed on my Slip N' Slide and another where he stuck Tiger Balm in my speedo, I still harbor an affection for flopping down on a wet piece of plastic like a wounded seal (the animal, not the singer).
So, you can imagine my excitement in revealing the following information: Slide the City by SPD is returning to Guangzhou!
This year’s event will be held at Fisherman's Wharf, in Panyu District, and, like last year, will feature a gigantic 300-meter waterslide that has a thrilling seven-story descent. There will also be food stalls, games and performances from DJs and rap artists.
Of note: children under 1.2 meters in height will not be allowed to partake in the fun, probably because of the risk of ‘unintentional urination’ (I’m speculating).
Admittedly, after such a hot summer in Guangzhou, including that possibly-record-breaking day of heat in Huadu District, a giant waterslide is exactly what city residents need to end the season on a high note.
Fri-Sun Sept 8-10, 10.30am-10.30pm; RMB180/230. Fisherman's Wharf. See event listing.
