WATCH: Man Builds iPhone from Scratch in Shenzhen

Scotty Allen has taken DIY to the next level.

Using Shenzhen’s sprawling Huaqiang Bei electronics market – which serves up everything from legit goods to pilfered parts – he reportedly built an iPhone 6s piece by purchased piece.

His YouTube video documenting the process has more than 800,000 views and he’s received media attention from the likes of Gizmodo and Cnet.

Both media outlets have struck a slightly skeptical tone, with Gizmodo writing: "there’s a chance this guy is messing with us."

But if there is anywhere in the world that Allen could complete his 'few-month' project, it's tech-heavy Shenzhen.

In the video, Allen discovers mid-assembly that the buttons on the phone don’t feel right. A Huaqiang Bei vendor takes a look and hands over the part he needs.

“It’s not a lot different than putting together your own desktop computer,” Allen says towards the end of the video. “It’s just a little bit smaller.”
