It's hard to forget last month's epic air rage incident aboard Air Asia flight FD9101 from Bangkok to Nanjing when Chinese passengers threw hot water at a stewardess and threatened to blow up the plane, forcing a return to Bangkok half-way through the flight.
After Air Asia flight QZ8501 went down en route from Surabaya to Singapore later in the month, some Chinese web users decided that the two incidents of Air Asia making the headlines must be related somehow, and they resolved to find out how.
In a textbook conspiracy theory circulated online since, one netizen thinks he's cracked the case: America wanted to blow up FD9101 for some reason and the shit-stirrer on board was actually a Chinese secret agent who got wind of the plot and intentionally incited the hot water incident in order to turn the plane around and save everyone on board.
Bearing in mind that we endorse absolutely none of this malarkey, here's what he hopefully calls his "analysis":
Although the plane went down over Indonesian waters, the true target of QZ8501 was the same as MH17 and MH370: Malaysia.
Both the South China Sea and Ukraine are areas of strategic interest for the United States, and both tragedies served US interests abroad: by having naval vessels take part in the search for MH370 America had occasion to accentuate it's pivot to Asia and return as a Pacific power so as to counter the rise of China's naval capabilities.
The shooting down of MH17 likewise gave Washington cause to intensify sanctions against Russia and continue demonizing Putin's government, helping the case of the eastern expansion of the NATO military alliance.
So why are Malaysian aircraft so maliciously targeted? The reasons, according to this theory, are threefold:
- Malaysia is a consistently anti-American country, refusing to stand on the American side as their foreign policy interferes more in the region.
- As a "moderate Muslim nation," Malaysia undermines the demonization of Islam inherent in Washington's "War on Terror" narrative.
- As a claimant in territorial disputes in the South China Sea, Kuala Lumpur has rebuffed US attempts to intercede in the dispute and maintains cordial relations with Beijing, frustrating the American stratagem to drive a wedge between China and the nations of ASEAN.
As an added bonus, the other countries effected by all three tragedies (Russia, China and Indonesia) are all friends of Malaysia and "countries America doesn't like."
"America shot down MH370 and QZ8501 as a warning to Malaysia and Indonesia not to get too close to China," the "hypothesis" concludes: "There's nothing the evil American empire wouldn't do to further its selfish interests!"
Convinced? Neither are we. But the conspiracy theory still has one more thing to add: "This year, it's best that we all stay in China to celebrate Lunar New Year."
Which posits the real question: is this conspiracy theory actually a conspiracy to boost domestic tourism? The truth is out there...
