3,000 students in enrolled the Guangdong Economics and Trade Vocational College are reported to have launched a protest against the school canteen over food prices on Tuesday night.

The protest started at around 10:00pm and lasted until 2:00am, with students throwing trash from dorm buildings and subsequently breaking into the canteen.

“Some students broke the windows, some even lit books on fire before throwing them downstairs, which set a tree on fire,” A witness, surnamed Zhou, recalls. “But they quickly poured water downstairs to put out the fire.”

According to some students, the protest was started because the canteen charged more for food than the prices listed. The school convenience store and health clinic have also been reportedly overcharging students.

On top of the food prices being high, the quality has also long been questioned. Students showed reporters photos of worms and hair in their lunches. On top of that, students are not allowed to order takeout, presumably to ensure the school canteen’s monopoly.

The students allegedly resorted to these radical measures because the administration had failed to meet the students’ demands after several rounds of negotiations.

Two special police units were dispatched to store order on campus.
