Seven people, including the deputy director of a blood bank, have been arrested for threatening, abusing and coercing children to sell their blood in western Gansu province.

On 5 August, ringleaders Chen and Li were indicted for forcing more than 10 minors from primary and middle schools in Wuwei to participate in the blood "donation" drive. The provincial government's website reported that Mr. Huang, the deputy director of the blood bank and other suspects, including three teenagers, were officially arrested.

Police reported the victims gave false personal information and had to donate about 600CC of blood twice a month, while the suspects received over RMB1,000 each time. An informed source revealed that each person in the operation made a profit of as much as RMB220 after selling the blood plasma.

According to reports, Chen was the mastermind behind the whole operation, which lasted from October 2013 to April 2014. Police investigations are still ongoing.

In other gross, illegal, and grossly illegal donation-related news, back-alley surgeons in Jiangxi were also tried this week for smuggling illegally harvested kidneys under the guise of frozen seafood.
