Two people died and two more were injured when a free-falling elevator plunged from the third floor of a villa in Dalian City down to the second level basement.

The accident occurred at around 2pm on Friday in the Mingxiuzhuangyuan residential area of the city, in Liaoning province. The villa was in the process of being decorated.

A spokesperson from the Quality and Technology Supervision Bureau of Dalian said that the elevator, fabricated by a Suzhou-based manufacturer in Jiangsu, was not supervised by the local quality watchdog as it is a private residence - as is the case with 50 other villas in the area.

The two injured individuals were sent to a local hospital for treatment. Investigations are underway into the cause of the accident.
