GP Batteries exec jumps off Hong Kong office building

A senior exec of GP Batteries International threw himself off the roof of his office building in Kwai Chung, Hong Kong on Thursday.

Andrew Ng Sung-on, vice-chairman and executive director of Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) and chairman and chief executive of GP Batteries International, was confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics after jumping off the Gold Peak Building.

Although no suicide note was discovered, his briefcase and tablet computer were found on the roof of the eight-storey building where a police source said the 64 year old had been spotted heading a few minutes before his death. Ng had reportedly been depressed in the months leading up to his death after being troubled by the company's business.

Ng joined the company in 1975, which was founded in  in 1964, and had been vice-chairman of the group since 1990.The company was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1984.

Victor Lo Chung-wing, group chairman and chief executive, expressed his "deepest sorrow" on hearing the news.

A postmortem is expected to be carried out to confirm the cause of death.

In February, a JP Morgan banker threw himself off the roof of the company's Hong Kong headquarters due to "work stress".
