The same well-dressed robber is believed to be behind two failed Hong Kong bank robbery attempts, according to city police.
A man in a tie, a black jacket and leather shoes approached staff at both a Wing Lung Bank branch in Sau Mau Ping on Tuesday and China Citic Bank branch in Sham Shui Po Thursday, claiming he had a bomb in the backpack he was carrying. The man demanded HK$100,000 from Wing Lung Bank and HK$10,000 from China Citic Bank, neither of which he received.
"The robber fled empty-handed as the teller activated the alarm," chief inspector Wallace Lee Che-hung of Sham Shui Po district crime squad said. The man fled the scene, managing to escape a group of policemen who were investigating a mugging nearby and had raced to the bank to find the man.
The police were still searching for the man late Thursday night. The flash would-be robber is believed to be in his early 40s.
According to South China Morning Post, the number of robberies in Hong Kong has drastically reduced within the last decade. "Police received four reports of bank robberies last year and three in 2012. Reports of all types of robbery fell to 500 last year from 616 in 2012; 713 in 2011; and 778 in 2010. In 2002, there were some 3,493 robberies", the paper said.
