A drunk driver has demonstrated some shrewd improvisation under pressure after he fled the scene of the seven-car-accident he caused on March 31 in Nanjing, Jiangsu province. The intoxicated man was able to evade arrest by pretending to be cooking lobsters at a nearby roadside eatery.

This is not a joke.

Police officers found the suspect’s abandoned Mercedes-Benz near the intersection of Jiangsu and Ningxia Roads, rammed into the nose of a parked car. Five other cars lined up behind it were also damaged; such was the force of the impact. There were no injuries reported.

Witnesses said the man, surnamed Liu, exited the sedan from the passenger’s side after the incident and fled the scene. Police soon discovered a man that fit witness descriptions casually cooking lobsters at a nearby roadside eatery. The clearly drunk man told police he was the owner and had nothing to do with the accident.

"I am just a cook here, and I am absolutely not the driver of that car," said the man, a line that could have come out of any cartoon or sketch show.

Again, not a joke.

Unfortunately, the man’s astute cover was blown when the legitimate restaurant owner returned and told officers he did not know the man. Liu was subsequently escorted to police headquarters for further questioning.

"Some people say he's the driver, but we haven't been able to confirm it," one patrolman handling the case said.

A case has been filed and further investigation is underway.
