Hong Kong has changed a lot in the last 10 years, let alone the last 40. In 1972, when photographer Nick DeWolf visited and took the incredible photos below, the city was in the process of reinventing itself from a manufacturing base into a financial centre.

The early 70s was also when representatives of the Government of Hong Kong, led by then governor Murray MacLehose, began visting Beijing to discuss the city's future beyond 1997, when the New Territories land lease agreement was due to expire. Those discussions would result in the ceding of Hong Kong from Great Britain to the People's Republic of China, and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
