Social media in China has been abuzz over the past 24 hours, with expats and locals alike speculating on the fate of a 3-year-old American boy who was reported missing on the night of November 3 in Guangzhou. This afternoon, the Consulate General of the United States in Guangzhou confirmed that the toddler, identified only as Liam, has died.

“We have received notification from the PSB of Liam’s death and we are continuing to provide consular services to Liam’s family,” a US consulate spokesperson told That’s. “This is a horrible tragedy and our hearts go out to all of Liam’s family.”

News of Liam’s disappearance first surfaced yesterday morning and resulted in considerable attention from the expatriate community in Guangzhou, with family, friends of the family and total strangers spreading news related to the missing boy via WeChat. A grassroots search party was also organized for 6pm last night, before being called off after unconfirmed reports that Liam had been found began surfacing.

The circumstances of Liam’s death have not been made public and we encourage people to respect the privacy of his family at this difficult time.
