A 16 year old woman from Taian, Shandong province tried to kill herself after she was sexually assaulted by several men as part of a 'local wedding tradition'.

According to Xinhua, the teenager was serving as maid of honour to her cousin when she was grabbed by a group of men who groped and sexually assaulted her as part of a "tradition" that sounds like it could have been made up by Mel Gibson

After photos of the incident made the rounds online, the bride herself stepped into the fray, defending her male guests and saying that she'd informed her cousin of the tradition beforehand ("I need you to help hold my dress, make a speech, oh and at some point my husband's friends will try and rape you k thx").

The teenager was reportedly traumatised by the incident and has attempted to end her life. Her family has contacted police.

"We will pursue this matter to the end," the girl's father told reporters.

Note: original post included an image of the assault taken place, on review we have decided to remove this from our coverage.
