Government officials in Beijing are now giving away intelligent wrist straps to aid residents who suffer from memory loss. The program was launched as a means to help the estimated 100,000 senior citizens who suffer from memory impairment (including dementia) in Beijing.
The device, which looks like a fashionable watch, has tons of useful features. It can pinpoint locations and make phone calls, which helps seniors to not get lost.
The capital’s Working Committee Office on Ageing states that at least 1,000 families have submitted applications to receive a wrist strap. And four hundred senior citizens are currently using a strap.
According to officials in charge of the program, 10,000 of these smart devices will be issued to certain Beijing residents at no cost. To qualify, one must be over 60 years old and suffer from some sort of memory or cognitive impairment or have dementia. They must also be a legally registered Beijing resident, though non-natives with temporary residence permits are also eligible.
The government is paying for the program, which includes three years of internet and service fees, CRIENGLISH.com reports. After three years, residents can choose to keep the wrist straps but will need to pay the for the expenses out of pocket. Officials did say that they will offer financial assistance to some low-income residents after the three years are up.
