Back in October Facebook CEO and noted Xi Jinping fanboy Mark Zuckerberg busted out his haikeyi Mandarin chops at a Q&A session at Tsinghua University – eliciting wild cheers of appreciation from the audience.
We imagine his latest Chinese-language partner was not quite as impressed, but Zuckerberg was thrilled to get the chance to practice his Putonghua with China’s president, humblebragging that the exchange was "the first time I've ever spoken with a world leader entirely in a foreign language.” The South China Morning Post reports that the “conversation lasted less than a minute” – probably not enough time to ask Xi to unblock Facebook.
Yes, Zuckerberg even wore a suit and tie for the occasion!
Also in attendance was Lu Wei, China’s top Internet regulator. It was during Lu’s visit to the Facebook offices in December that the world first learned of Zuckerberg’s appreciation for Xi. Zuckerberg casually left a copy of Xi’s The Governance of China book on his desk and said, “I bought copies of this book for my colleagues. I want them to understand socialism with Chinese characteristics."
Hey, whatever it takes to get Facebook unblocked, Mark.
