This morning, Chinese state-media juggernaut Xinhua tweeted a tweet. It was weird.
Everything about this is wrong. Let's take it one thing at a time.
Firstly, #ChinaQuiz isn't a thing. #China, maybe. #Quiz, sure. But #ChinaQuiz has been used fewer than 10 times in the history of Twitter, and all for completely unrelated events.
Secondly, there was no quiz. Just the mention of a quiz, and then a picture, and that's it. No link to an article, to a quiz, or anything else.
Then there's "(web pic)." As opposed to what? Is every picture on the internet a "web pic"? We assume this would normally mean something akin to "file photo," but this image was clearly meant specifically for an article about SWAT sign language (an article which, it bears repeating, was not linked to in the tweet).
And then we get to the image itself. Here is where the fun begins. Top left is certainly "Oh my gawd." Bottom, center is killing a fly. We're not sure what the others are, but the bottom right is definitely, inescapably ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
For the record, Xinhua tweets:
Official explanation by local police: 1. man 2. woman 3. kid 4 hostage 5. commander 6. I don't understand.
Protip: If you're in a SWAT team and missed an order, probably don't swing your gun around with one hand and shrug.
