Travel Gossip: Direct China-US Routes on the Rise

In an update from the U.S. Department of Transportation, direct flights between China and the United States are set to increase starting November 9.

The new document states that Chinese airlines will be permitted to operate up to 35 direct flights between the two countries each week.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were over 300 direct flights each week connecting China and the United States, with peak numbers reaching as high as 340 flights. 

However, as of now, the total weekly direct flights have been limited to just 24, which is less than 10% of the pre-pandemic levels.

The major carriers currently flying direct routes between China and the U.S. include Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines. 

Among Chinese cities, Shanghai sees the highest number of direct flights to and from the United States, with other departure cities including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Xiamen. 

Los Angeles stands as the U.S. city with the most direct flights to the Chinese mainland, and other U.S. destinations include New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Detroit, and Seattle.
