In what’s being called a shocking move, Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim (That’s ‘Head Coach’ for you Americans) has been offered a cool EUR12 million a year to take the helm at Beijing Guoan. Last year Jardim took a perennially underwhelming AS Monaco and pushed them to the semi-finals of the Champions League and the club’s first Ligue 1 title in nearly 20 years.
At the time of writing Beijing Guoan sits in seventh place in the CSL, and they’d like to climb higher. The Capital Club has ambitions beyond China, they aim to make a splash in the AFC Champions League like Guangzhou Evergrande did in 2013 and 2015. But a manager does not make a team, and Guoan will need to open the checkbook for some quality players first.
