UPDATE (June 17, 2019 10.54am): According to the Paper, the boy was confirmed dead on June 16 at 5.12am. In a WeChat post at 5.45am that morning, a relative wrote that the boy “went peacefully” and thanked everyone for their blessings.
A 6-year-old boy was seriously injured in Shenzhen’s Futian district today, after being struck by a falling window at a residential complex.
According to SZ News, the window fell from the 20th floor of Jingji Yujing Huacheng apartment complex after a homeowner tried to open it. Property management staff are blaming the tragic incident on the advanced age of the frame that was holding the window in place.
Surveillance cameras captured footage of the accident, including the horrific moment the small boy was crushed by the falling window. The boy’s mother was with him at the time, and can be seen in the footage pulling the remains of the window off of her motionless son.
We have chosen not to include footage from the scene in this article due to its graphic nature. The video can be found here.
Onlookers at the scene today told Shenzhen Daily Sunshine that they’d witnessed another incident involving a falling window at the same residential compound less than a month ago, on May 22. Thankfully, no one was injured in the previous window-falling episode.
As of press time, the child is undergoing emergency treatment at a hospital and the extent of his injuries is presently unclear.
Update (June 13, 2019 6.50pm): this article has been updated to include the name of the residential complex.
