On June 18, an 11-year-old Zhuhai girl was killed by a pane of glass after it fell from a 20th floor apartment and smashed on her head. The tragic incident occurred at around 10am on Leyuan Lu, in Xiangzhou District, when the unnamed girl and her two siblings were on their way to extracurricular weekend classes.
A witness to the tragedy, surnamed Luo, reported hearing a “loud bang” in the distance and, when he rushed towards the sound, he found a young girl lying in a crosswalk covered in blood. Her siblings were crying next to her body, understandably in shock.
Emergency services were immediately called by Mr. Luo, but, unfortunately, it was too late to save the girl – who was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
According to a statement by the victim’s younger brother, issued to a reporter from toutiao.cn, the three siblings were crossing the street in front of a residential complex when his sister was hit by the glass.
Both the Zhuhai Public Security Bureau and the local police have confirmed the incident, with the later verifying the origin of the glass: “After initial investigation, the glass had fallen from a house on the 20th floor in building number two at Hengfu Court on Leyuan Road.”
According to a People’s Daily Online report, the window pane is thought to have fallen while being cleaned by a housemaid.
A pane of glass fell from the 76th floor of the iconic Shanghai Tower last month, barely missing a man exiting his car.
This incident highlights just how lucky one Shanghai man got off last month, when he narrowly missed being hit by a piece of curtain wall glass that dropped from the 76th floor of the Shanghai Tower.
The Zhuhai accident is still being actively investigated by police, according to reports.
