What's on Waimai is a monthly column where we single out delicious delivery food choices for your dining convenience.

Caoshifu Doujiang Youtiao has six locations around Shenzhen and serves up a variety of breakfast and lunch food. Feeling snackish one morning, we perused Meituan and came across a beautiful sight: a crab shell packed with sticky rice, vegetables and crab meat, called xiehuang babao fan, or ‘crab ovary eight treasure rice.’

The dish arrived packed with sticky brown rice, which was topped with a few green beans and a greasy mushroom (we admittedly pitched the shroom directly in the rubbish bin).

Savory and sweet, we found the rice-filled crab carcass a satisfying snack, despite our momentary disgust when we realized the soft orange globs are actually crab ovaries. While the dish was unquestionably tasty, it was lacking a bit in the crab meat department (not ovaries however, there were lots of those).

Good at breakfast, lunch or as a post-dinner snack, don’t let the ovaries put you off here, as this was quite the satisfying treat. Do note: one crab is not enough to fill you up, so plan to order more than one if you want to make a proper meal of Caoshifu Doujiang Youtiao’s crab ovary rice.
