Starting October 11, musicians from around the globe will congregate in Shenzhen for the 7th OCT-Loft Jazz Festival.
Styles range from hard-hitting funk to the avant-garde, and we're giving away free tickets for five different days of the fest. See below for details, plus blurbs about each act.
The festival lasts until October 29; for more information and the full schedule, visit OCTloftjazz.com.
October 13: Lao Dan, Huan Qing
Lao Dan began with the sax at the age of eight and later turned to the Chinese flute, or dizi. His experimentation and research into wind instruments around the world has lent him a rich, varied repertoire. In 2013 he founded the group Red Scarf, which blends avant-garde jazz with rock and metal.
Huan Qing, born in Chongqing, is a well-known avant-garde musician who now lives in Dali. While probing the depths of experimental music, his work is rooted in folk cultures. Huan is inspired by the tunes of China's ethnic minorities as well as traditional instruments.
October 14: Lucas Niggli (Speaker), Kalo-Yele
In his talk, drummer Lucas Niggli will discuss Intakt, an adventurous Swiss music label with a taste for the experimental. Intakt was founded by a jazz-loving former journalist and has since spawned Unerhört! ('Unheard!'), one of the most important contemporary jazz and improvised music festivals in Switzerland.
Kalo-Yele, meaning 'moonlight' in Bambara, is a trio consisting of Aly Keïta, Jan Galega Brönnimann and Lucas Niggli. They mix segments of traditional African repertoire with Western jazz and improvisation, creating true 'world music.'
October 19: Buttering Trio, Michał Milczarek Trio
Buttering Trio are three gentle souls from Tel Aviv. Using heavy beats, fat bass lines, live instruments and sweet yet poignant lyrics, the trio creates densely layered Nu Soul. What started out as studio jams in a smoky basement in Berlin has since evolved into a worldwide touring act.
Michał Milczarek Trio (MM3) is a Polish rock-jazz trio known for a very intense concert experience. Their performances are spontaneous, presenting jazz from a contemporary perspective. In 2014 they won the 'Jazz Phonographic Debut of the Year in Poland' award for their debut 'Squirrels and Butterflies.'
October 20: Mads Mathias Quartet
Described by Danish daily broadsheet Politiken as 'Denmark’s leading male jazz vocalist,' Mads Mathias is also a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Inspired by great jazz singers from Nat King Cole to Harry Connick, Jr., Mathias is nevertheless an original talent with memorable, stylishly crafted tunes.
October 22: Phil Abraham Quartet, Odd Beholder
After studying classical piano and guitar, Belgium-born Phil Abraham was seduced by jazz and taught himself to play the trombone. He has taken part in more than 60 albums, 11 with his own group, with which he won many prizes, including first place at the International Jazz Contest in Sorgues, France, in 1988.
Odd Beholder's precise, unpretentious music reflects Daniela Weinmann’s and Tim Wettstein’s shared interest in ambivalent moods. Out of their introverted, stripped-down sound came the underground hit 'Landscape Escape,' and its corresponding video shot in Azerbaijan.
