WeChat was abuzz this morning in Shenzhen when images of a large black plume of smoke rising above Nanshan District began making the rounds on social media.
Though the jury is still out on what caused the smoke, one Weibo user speculated it could be the result of a fire near the Xiao Nanshan power station:
As of 12.41pm, a That’s reporter in Shekou has confirmed that the smoke has cleared.
We will post more updates here as we receive them.
UPDATE #1 (1.43pm CST): The Nanshan Fire Department refused to comment on the smoke cloud when contacted by That’s at 1.03pm and 1.36pm.
UPDATE #2 (2.40pm CST): Shekou Daily has reported the cause of the smoke was a compost fire at Chiwan Port, which began around 11.30am this morning. Fire fighters and local authorities worked quickly to contain and extinguish the blaze, which was under control by 12.45pm. The fire was out by 1pm, according to reports, and the governor of Nanshan was spotted heading into the affected area.
