If Shakespeare had lived in the south of China, he never would have written that “summer’s lease hath all too short a date.” The hottest time of year is a long, grueling period in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, with stultifying humidity interspersed with sudden thunderstorms. Of course, the climate also means the people living here can enjoy a longer social season of pool parties, beach bonfires and other frivolity that involves wearing as few clothes as possible.
Hot, sultry summer – what better time to unveil our sexiest people of the PRD? Deciding what is sexy proved a lot harder than we anticipated. After all, someone doesn’t need to be classically handsome or beautiful in order to exude sensuality. Turn to any of the great writers – or even a modern-day celeb – on what exactly makes someone sexy and you’ll be confronted by a host of different opinions and thoughts. Is it their creativity? Their intelligence? Their perfectly sculpted pectorals or their bootylicious behind? Their scars? Their political conviction? The way they flop out of a swimming pool like an uncoordinated seal?
We’re sure our choices are going to generate a lot of debate, but ultimately we opted to choose individuals who got our pulses racing not just because they have the bodies of Greek gods, but because they are also making praiseworthy contributions to the community, to the city or to the world. Throw in a dash of that elusive quality the French so mysteriously dub ‘je ne sais quoi’ and you have the recipe for our sexy stars. If you’re about to snap your fan in half with anticipation, flip to p32 now!
Also in this issue, we’ve interviewed those iconic turn-of-the-century rockers Linkin Park ahead of their performance in Shenzhen this month. Their debut album, Hybrid Theory, became the soundtrack for a whole generation of rebellious youngsters and continues to be named one of the most important rock albums of the new millennium (p26). Our other musical coup is an interview with OK Go, the band that caused a sensation with the release of the music video to their song, ‘Here It Goes Again’ – we guarantee that even if you haven’t seen the original clip of the band dancing on treadmills, you’ve seen an homage or parody (p28).
Turning to more local culture, we’ve explored the traditional bronze casting of old Xiguan (p12), delved into the controversial history of Darlie Toothpaste’s blackface imagery (p14) and met the woman who’s turned dining solo on a home-cooked meal into a fashionable affair (p54).
Stay frosty, PRD!
