Shenzhen subway construction site collapse

The collapse of a Shenzhen subway construction site last Friday afternoon has left one person dead and four more injured, according to media reports.

The collapse occurred shortly after 4pm at a construction site along Shenzhen’s Metro Line 7 (in the Shenzhen Huanggang Port of Futian district). The accident left a massive crater measuring 10 meters wide and three meters deep.

According to reports, the five construction workers were inside a ‘cabin’ at the time of the collapse. What kind of cabin they were in is unclear.

Fire fighters who responded to the incident used extension and cutting equipment to free the workers trapped in the rubble. All five people were removed from the accident site, with one being declared dead despite resuscitation efforts.

Two vehicles near the construction site fell into the massive hole, but thankfully, no passengers were inside.

Forty-eight households were evacuated in response to the collapse and buildings in the area surrounding the accident are being monitored.

The cause of the collapse is presently unknown.
