Covet: Harman portable speakers

In today’s wired world, we expect access to music no matter how far we wander. Cranking up the volume on an iPhone works fine in the car, but what about when you’re traversing whitecaps on Hong Kong’s southern island or hosting an outdoor barbeque with friends? In the past, bringing along a speaker meant packing a pile of wires and chargers too – not exactly the romantic getaway most have in mind.

This month, we’re exploring hassle-free alternatives that promise hours of solid beats on rechargeable battery power alone. Our favorite Bluetooth portable speakers include Harman’s highly rated JBL Flip 2 (RMB999), which packs massive sound and stable bass into a pocketsize device weighing less than one pound. Able to fit in most purses, the JBL Flip 2 comes with a hard case and charges via micro-USB, saving you the need to lug around an extra charger. Easily connected to playlists on any mobile device, laptop or tablet, the JBL Flip 2 can play nonstop for up to five hours.

Last year, Harman also introduced the JBL Pulse (RMB1,699), adding funky LED lava lights to the mix. Radiating beams of color that pulse to the beat of your favorite tunes, the JBL Pulse was called “mesmerizing” by CNET, while PC Mag asserted its “good general sound quality.” Perhaps most exciting is that those with an iOS device can customize the lighting patterns even more with the free JBL music app. Expert listeners may choose a speaker with more clarity in the low-mid range, but for most, the JBL Pulse delivers on volume and certainly heats things up on the dance floor.
