October is a month of two faces in the PRD. On the one hand, everybody gets a whole week off work to celebrate the founding of the glorious People’s Republic of China; that special time of year when you have to make the impossible decision about whether to enjoy the extra-long holiday by braving the Chinese tourists and traveling abroad, or simply spare yourself the hassle and relax at home with an improving book (or the new Planet of the Apes movie, we’re not here to judge).
On the other hand, this month also marks Guangzhou’s biannual Canton Fair, when the city fills with international visitors looking for cheap deals to manufacture everything from nifty new toasters to the latest handbag fashions – according to our fashion editor Marianna Cerini, buckled Dopp kits for men and metallic oversized wallets for women are all the rage.
In short, it’s one of the busiest months for the region, and we’ve tried to cram in as much as possible into this issue, from Guangzhou’s color run to Shenzhen’s light run (check out the events sections for more details).
Arts are going into overdrive, with jazz festivals in both Shenzhen and Guangzhou, a visit from opera’s number-one diva and a lavish ballet rendition of Romeo and Juliet from Canada’s oldest surviving ballet troupe.
But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? In this month’s cover story we illuminate the lives of Africans in Guangzhou, as well as dip into the delicious culinary culture they’ve brought with them from nations such as Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda. Plus, ever wondered what China’s up to in Africa?
